Life can feel like a bumpy ride at times and this feeling is more common than you might think. Nearly half the adult population will experience anxiety or depression or some other psychological problem at some time during their life. For example:
Anxiety can be a longstanding issue for some and for others it may feel like it has come out of the blue. The symptoms are similar to those that we experience when we have genuine reasons to be fearful. However, when we suffer with anxiety we struggle with uncertainty, overestimate the severity of the situation we face and underestimate our ability to cope. This can be accompanied by a tendency to overthink, excessive worrying and generally feeling on edge. Sometimes we can make an unconscious connection that being anxious and worrying a lot keeps us safe, so to stop these thought processes can feel challenging on our own.
Depression can be a mixture of negative feelings and physical symptoms, such as feeling sad and hopeless and finding little pleasure in life as you generally see the world through a negative lens. You may also be experiencing problems with sleep, loss of appetite / overeating, feeling tired and lacking energy. For some, symptoms can also include suicidal thoughts.
Grief is something that most of us will experience in our lifetime, when we lose someone or something important to us. When we experience the loss of someone close or when a relationship, job or life chapter comes to an end, grief is likely to show up in our lives and sometimes it hits us out of the blue. People can experience grief in different ways but common symptoms include feeling numb and possibly in a daze. You may experience overwhelming sadness and what feels like endless tears and generally feeling exhausted. Sometimes it can give rise to feelings of anger and at times you may experience guilt.
